Independent Living Program (ILP)

Build your skills. Grow your confidence. Live more independently.

The Independent Living Program helps adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities develop and maintain practical skills for everyday life. Learning centered on the individual

Each person brings different strengths, experiences, and goals. Independent living training can help someone become more confident while living with others or prepare for and maintain a more independent living arrangement. The focus is on building abilities that support the person’s own priorities.

Building and maintaining progress

Learning a skill is one step; using it consistently is another. ILP can include practice and reinforcement to help participants maintain existing abilities and apply what they learn to everyday situations.

Getting started

Adults interested in ILP should contact their regional center service coordinator to discuss their goals and support needs. The Individual Program Plan (IPP) process helps identify appropriate services, with training tailored to the individual’s approved plan. dds.ca.gov

CLIENT RIGHTS — Independent Living Program (ILP)

Primary focus: Learning to live independently.

Clients have the right to receive individualized training that helps them develop and maintain skills needed for everyday life.

Clients should be supported in:

  • Learning cooking, cleaning, shopping, and budgeting.

  • Making decisions about their daily routines.

  • Managing their own money and personal belongings.

  • Developing independence at their own pace.

  • Participating in community activities.

  • Having their preferences respected during training.

Important:  ILP staff should teach and encourage independence rather than unnecessarily making decisions for clients.
